एक समय की बात है राजा हरिश्चंद्र के राज्य में एक कुम्हार था। वह मिट्टी के बर्तन बनाता, लेकिन वे कच्चे रह जाते थे। एक पुजारी की सलाह पर उसने इस समस्या को दूर करने के लिए एक छोटे बालक को मिट्टी के बर्तनों के साथ आंवा में डाल दिया।उस दिन संकष्टी चतुर्थी का दिन था। उस बच्चे की मां अपने बेटे के लिए परेशान थी। उसने गणेशजी से बेटे की कुशलता की प्रार्थना की।दूसरे दिन जब कुम्हार ने सुबह उठकर देखा तो आंवा में उसके बर्तन तो पक गए थे, लेकिन बच्चे का बाल बांका भी नहीं हुआ था। वह डर गया और राजा के दरबार में जाकर सारी घटना बताई।इसके बाद राजा ने उस बच्चे और उसकी मां को बुलवाया तो मां ने सभी तरह के विघ्न को दूर करने वाली संकष्टी चतुर्थी का वर्णन किया। इस घटना के बाद से महिलाएं संतान और परिवार के सौभाग्य के लिए संकट चौथ का व्रत करने लगीं।
