पौराणिक एवं प्रचलित श्री गणेश कथा के अनुसार एक बार देवता कई विपदाओं में घिरे थे। तब वह मदद मांगने भगवान शिव के पास आए। उस समय शिव के साथ कार्तिकेय तथा गणेशजी भी बैठे थे। देवताओं की बात सुनकर शिव जी ने कार्तिकेय व गणेश जी से पूछा कि तुम में से कौन देवताओं के कष्टों का निवारण कर सकता है। तब कार्तिकेय व गणेश जी दोनों ने ही स्वयं को इस कार्य के लिए सक्षम बताया। इस पर भगवान शिव ने दोनों की परीक्षा लेते हुए कहा कि तुम दोनों में से जो सबसे पहले पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करके आएगा वही देवताओं की मदद करने जाएगा।भगवान शिव के मुख से यह वचन सुनते ही कार्तिकेय अपने वाहन मोर पर बैठकर पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा के लिए निकल गए, परंतु गणेश जी सोच में पड़ गए कि वह चूहे के ऊपर चढ़कर सारी पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करेंगे तो इस कार्य में उन्हें बहुत समय लग जाएगा। तभी उन्हें एक उपाय सूझा। गणेश अपने स्थान से उठें और अपने माता-पिता की सात बार परिक्रमा करके वापस बैठ गए। परिक्रमा करके लौटने पर कार्तिकेय स्वयं को विजेता बताने लगे। तब शिव जी ने श्री गणेश से पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा ना करने का कारण पूछा।तब गणेश ने कहा – ‘माता-पिता के चरणों में ही समस्त लोक हैं।’ यह सुनकर भगवान शिव ने गणेश जी को देवताओं के संकट दूर करने की आज्ञा दी। इस प्रकार भगवान शिव ने गणेश जी को आशीर्वाद दिया कि चतुर्थी के दिन जो तुम्हारा पूजन करेगा और रात्रि में चंद्रमा को अर्घ्य देगा उसके तीनों ताप यानी दैहिक ताप, दैविक ताप तथा भौतिक ताप दूर होंगे। इस व्रत को करने से व्रतधारी के सभी तरह के दुख दूर होंगे और उसे जीवन के भौतिक सुखों की प्राप्ति होगी। चारों तरफ से मनुष्य की सुख-समृद्धि बढ़ेगी। पुत्र-पौत्रादि, धन-ऐश्वर्य की कमी नहीं रहेगी।

According to the mythological and popular Shri Ganesh Katha, once the deity was surrounded by many calamities. Then he came to Lord Shiva seeking help. At that time Kartikeya and Ganesha were also sitting with Shiva. After listening to the deities, Shiva asked Kartikeya and Ganesha that which one of you can solve the sufferings of the deities. Then both Kartikeya and Ganesh ji declared themselves capable for this work. On this, Lord Shiva tested both of them and said that the one who will come first after circumambulating the earth will go to help the gods. On hearing these words from the mouth of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya sat on his vehicle peacock and started circumambulating the earth. But Ganesha got thinking that if he would circumambulate the whole earth by climbing on top of a rat, it would take him a lot of time. That’s why they thought of a solution. Ganesha got up from his place and sat back after circumambulating his parents seven times. On returning from circumambulation, Kartikeya started calling himself the winner. Then Lord Shiva asked Shri Ganesha the reason for not circumambulating the earth. Then Ganesha said – ‘All the worlds are at the feet of the parents.’ Hearing this, Lord Shiva ordered Ganesha to remove the troubles of the deities. In this way, Lord Shiva blessed Ganesha that the one who worships you on Chaturthi day and offers Arghya to the moon at night, all the three heat i.e. physical heat, divine heat and material heat will go away. By observing this fast, all kinds of sorrows of the fasting person will be removed and he will get materialistic pleasures of life. Man’s happiness and prosperity will increase from all sides. There will be no dearth of son-grandson, wealth and opulence.
